QUESTION 1: WHY ARE MARATHA CONFEDERECY COINS ISSUED IN THE NAME OF THE MUGHAL EMPERORS?

December 27, 2017

If we look at the later Mughal Empire we find that history books tell us that the power of the Mughal emperors waned after Aurangzeb. My co-author Mohammed Tariq Ansari and I rather push that to a few years later until after the reign of Shah Alam I Bahadur.

Be that as it may many coins are described as Maratha and yet they are clearly issued in the name of the ruling Mughal Emperor.

It is a fundamental axiom of history (and coin issuing) that anyone who believes they have power, have a claim to power or for that matter just a big ego will issue coins in their name. This is certainly so at the time of the later Mughal Empire.

So we have a fundamental question that can also be asked

"WHY DID THE MARATHA'S ISSUE COINS IN THE NAME OF THE MUGHAL EMPEROR?"
